Chandigarh is the best-planned city in India, with architecture which is world-renowned, and a quality of life, which is unparalleled. As the capital of the states of Punjab and Haryana, and the Union Territory of Chandigarh it is a prestigious city. The face of modern India, Chandigarh, is the manifestation of a dream that Pt. Chandigarh derives its name from the temple of “Chandi Mandir” located in the vicinity of the site selected for the city. The deity ‘Chandi’, the goddess of power and a fort of ‘garh’ laying beyond the temple gave the city its name “Chandigarh-The City Beautiful”.
The city has a pre-historic past. The gently sloping plains on which modern Chandigarh exists, was in the ancient past, a wide lake ringed by a marsh. The fossil remains found at the site indicate a large variety of aquatic and amphibian life, which was supported by that environment. About 8000 years ago the area was also known to be a home to the Harappans.
Between Rock Garden and Sukhna Lake a picturesque Botanical garden is spread over 88 acre. Small pools and the rare species kept under the green house draw garden lovers as well as botanists.
Next to city centre, in Sector 16 is situated Zakir Hussain Rose Garden Asia’s largest Rose Garden and is spreaded over 30 acres of land having over 1600 different species or roses.
These have been planted beautifully carved out lawns and flowers beds. Like the cultural zone which is just across the road in sector 10,this was also planned by Dr. M.S. Randhawa as his interest in horticulture and fondness for flowers was profuse. Every year, either at the end of February or beginning of March, a big festival known as Rose Festival, is celebrated at this garden. Over 20,000 people visit this festival. It’s one of the great celebrations in the city. There are lots of competitions, cultural celebrations and many other events.
Fragrance Garden is located in beautiful city Chandigarh in sector- 36. This garden as it name signify this garden has pleasant and flowers beautiful fragrance that refresh your mind and mood. Fragrance garden is one best picnic place where you can enjoy with family and friends. Hibiscus garden is situated in sector 36 adjoining Dakshin Marg. This garden was opened in 1974. It is spread in the area of approx 8 acres .A perfect place to visit with family for picnic and weekend enjoyments.
Hibiscus garden is famous for its hibiscus shrubs. There are more than 40 varieties of hibiscus flower. Bamboo plants of various types are also planted here the special things about these plants are they change their colour throughout the year. Japanese Garden is placed in sector 31 of Chandigarh. This garden is built on 13 acres Land. This garden is 100 foot extended and will join the two parts of the garden. The first part of garden is situated in sector 31 A and 31 B and 2nd part of the garden situated in sector 31 C and 31 D.
This garden has exclusive features like Japanese lanterns, Japanese tower, and Japanese styled river perception to increase the beauty of garden. On 7th November 2014 this garden was established office by Shivraj Patilon. In Japenese garden the choice of appropriate trees and plants at vantage places increase its splendor.
Located in Sector 1 .This garden is full of trees, here every tree commemorates some one who is no more.
Rock garden is very beautiful creativity of Mr. Nek Chand. Rock garden is extended over an area of forty – acres. Rock garden has manually built waterfalls and many other statuettes that have been made of waste and other form of thrown away materials like glasses, bangles, bottles, sinks, electrical waste, tiles, etc. And these waste materials are used in so well manner that it creates incredible art. And this rock garden indicates that nothing is waste you can recycle it and create amazing things from desecrate material. And for completing this wonderful garden work force of 50 laborers are employed for full-time labor. In 1983.Rock garden also come out in Indian stamp.
Butterfly Park in Chandigarh is situated in front of the main entrance of Chandigarh College of Engineering and Technology in sector 26 of Chandigarh. The butterfly park is extended over a region of 7 acres with a meticulous scene. In this garden for making habitat of butterflies special care is taken. This park is full of plants and vegetation with a different variety of trees. Cactus garden is formally recognized as National Cactus and Succulent Botanical Garden. Cactus garden is situated in Panchkula. This cactus garden is considered as the Asia’s largest garden dedicated to exceptional and rare species having more than 3,500 varieties. This garden has 2,500 varieties of cacti and succulents. Every year in March a cactus show is organized in this garden. In this garden there are not only cactus plants but also different varieties of plants like Aloe Ferox, Aloe Speciosa and other plants. In this garden different types of plants are available for sale. This garden also has 272 kinds of genus Mammillaria and 160 species have been growing naturally outdoor. Gathering of Indian succulents here is recognized as the largest in the earth.
Topiary Park is located in sector 35 of Chandigarh. This park is a best place for nature lover. And there is no ticket of this park as you can enjoy this park absolutely free. This park is established in 1987. This Park is primarily intended for the child folks. In this park mainly plants are from bush and creeper family has been remarkably created in the form of various animals, make the children really glad.
This park is filled with greenery and the park is open whole week and opening timings are from 8:00 in morning to 8 in evening. This is one of the best places to enjoy with children and also for making picnic with family. And even people from nearby area comes here to do jogging and morning/evening walk.
Chandigarh War Memorial perhaps the largest War Memorial of the country, with nearly 8459 names of the Deceased Soldiers since 1947 from Army Air Force and Navy stands located in the serene and beautiful Bougainvillea garden of Chandigarh and was inaugurated by H’ble President of India Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam on 17th August, 2006.
The ground breaking ceremony was performed by Gen. S.F. Rodrigues (Retd.) Governor of Punjab & Administrator of UT Chandigarh on June 11, 2005.
LT. Gen. J.F.R. Jacob (Retd.), a 1971 War Hero, who was Governor of Punjab & Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh, conceived the plan for this Memorial. He called it ‘SHANDAR YADGAR’ (Magnificent Memorial) while laying its foundation stone on April 28th, 2004.
Thus, Chandigarh War Memorial is a remarkable milestone in the history of Chandigarh, dedicated to those who laid their lives defending the country since independence.
The Capitol area was designed as a great pedestrian plaza with motorized traffic confined to sunken trenches. The complex is planned on a cross axis wherein rigid symmetry has been avoided in placement of various buildings.
The Capitol Complex is the focal point if the city, both visually and symbolically whose architectural whose architecture is considering to be the most representative of Le Corbusier’s work. This complex of Govt. buildings representing all three essential components of a complete democracy the Legislature, the executive and the judiciary stands against the blue silhouette of lower Shivalik ranges, on the foothills of Himalayas. The Capitol Complex is the embodiment of the spirit of exaltation, power & permanence experienced by Indians on acquiring self government after long, bitter struggle for freedom.
The three major components of the Capitol are the Assembly (Legislation), the Secretariat (Administration) and the High Court (Judiciary). While the linear façade of the Secretariat marks the edges of the Complex on the left side, the Assembly and the High Court are placed on the opposite ends of the Cross axis, facing each other across a 450 mtrs. Esplanade where a number of monuments symbolizing Le Corbusier’s theories of City planning have been placed. These include the Open Hand monument, often called the B ‘Monument of Chandigarh’ conveying ‘open to give, open to receive’. These symbolic forms were designed by Corbusier as a means to punctuate the axis of the Complex. Other monuments included the Martyrs Memorial- a tribute to the martyrs of the Punjab partition and the Tower of Shadows – a demonstration of Corbusiers’s theories of sun control.
Sukhna Lake is one the superb visiting place situated in Chandigarh. This lake was created in 1958. This lake is the creation of Le Corbusier and the Chief Engineer P L Verma and it was like a great gift for Chandigarh. During summer time, there are flow of men, women and kids from all walk of life present charitable service to maintain the lake for about three months. Open Hand Monument is a structure in Chandigarh, created by Le Corbusier who is a great architect. This open hand sculpture is 26 meters high i.e. of 85 feet. This sculpture is situated in sector 1 in the Capitol Complex of Chandigarh. It symbolizes the exchange of thoughts and ideas that mean there are open receive as well as share ideas. And this structure is designed in way that it moves with wind. It consists of a hand-like structure standing on a channel which turns like a weather cock with the stream of the wind. It is made up of metal sheets and its weighs is about 50 tonnes. Different from a weather cock, though, this hand-like structure embraces special importance of assigning a social message to the world. Le Corbusier designs this open hand monument to indicate peace and unity. The Open Hand monument is the authorized sign of Chandigarh. The Government Museum and Art Gallery, is located in Chandigarh city from partition time (1947). This museum and gallery is one of the leading institutions of India with a very prosperous anthology of Indian history. It consists of Gandharan sculptures, Rajasthani miniature paintings and also pahari paintings. This Museum and Art Gallery is situated in the heart of Chandigarh city. Corbusier himself designed this museum and building of museum is very attractive and eye catching.
The Museum was opened on the 6th May, 1968 under the proposal and active hold of Late Dr. M.S. Randhawa, well-known specialist and supporter of art, and after that Chief Commissioner of Chandigarh.
